Warum der Sommer stinkt / Why summer stinks

Angeblich regnet es hier zu viel und wir bekommen nicht genug Sonne und Vitamin D. Ich weiss, ich weiss, alle Leute lieben Sommer und Sonnenschein. Aber ich NICHT!!!
Es ist zu heiss und ich schwitze zu viel. Phillip und Spencer haben ganz schlimmen Heuschnupfen und wir müssen ständig Medizin kaufen, die dann doch nicht hilft oder nur minimal. Talitha hat Angst vor den Wespen und Bienen und zieht daher den ganzen Tag lang an meiner Hand, weil sie raus möchte, aber nicht alleine (Phillip zählt anscheinend nicht). Winston, andererseits, will immer draussen sein, auch ganz allein, was mir Sorgen macht, denn unser Grundstück (naja, es gehört Bob und Deanna) ist sehr gross und nicht umzäunt. Winston ist sehr unabhängig und sturrköpfig. Plus Winston (und Phillip und ich) kriegt leicht Sonnenbrand, und selbst wenn ich ihn eincreme, was mache ich mit seinem Kopf? Leider lässt er keine Mützen auf. Und ich hasse diese blöden Sonnenschutzcremes. Die Kinder können es nicht leiden wenn ich versuche sie einzucremen, alles ist schmierig (einschliesslich unser Holzfussboden) und es lässt sich nicht abwaschen, und die Klamotten bekommen Flecken von der Creme, die nicht mehr rauskommen. Ausserdem haben Talitha und Winston Ausschlag...von der Hitze, oder der Sonnenschutzcreme, oder wer weiss was. Abends wollen die Kinder nicht ins Bett weil es noch hell ist, aber alle sind überhitzt und übermüdet. Ergo, der Sommer stinkt und ich will mein Geld zurückerstattet haben!!!

Supposedly it rains too much here and we don’t get enough sun and vitamin D. I know, I know, everyone loves summer and sunshine. But I DON’T!!! It’s too hot and I sweat too much. Phillip and Spencer have bad allergies and we constantly need to buy medicine, which ends up not helping much anyway. Talitha is scared of the yellow jackets and bees and is always pulling on my hand because she wants to go outside but not by herself (apparently Phillip doesn’t count). Winston, on the other hand, wants to be outside all the time, even all alone, which worries me because our property (well it’s Bob and Deanna’s) is very big and not fenced. Winston is very independent and stubborn. In addition, Winston (and Phillip and I) sunburns easily, and even when I put sunscreen on him what do I do with his head? Unfortunately, he doesn’t do well with hats. And I hate these dumb sunscreen lotions. The kids don’t like to get all lotioned up, everything gets greasy (including our wood floor), the stuff doesn’t wash off, and the clothes get stains, which don’t come out. Furthermore, Talitha and Winston have a rash…from the heat, or the sunscreen lotion, or who knows what. At night, the kids don’t want to go to bed because it’s still light outside, but everyone is overheated and tired. Therefore, summer stinks and I want a refund!!!
And I hate all you people that love the sun and the heat, because you can actually enjoy summer with your tan skin while my legs stay pasty white no matter what I do and my nose gets redder and redder, and you can wear cute clothes and even layer because you don’t sweat, while I start to glisten just thinking about stepping outside, and you wear cute sandals, too, which I can never find when I look for some, and besides my feet sweat too much as well, even in sandals, and then I slide all around…spring and summer, argh!

Haircut / Haarschnitt

So, we decided it was time for a haircut for Talitha. She hates having her hair brushed and it's always in tangles. I was worried about cutting it myself, but I also didn't want to pay to have it cut and possibly not turn out...so, I just bit the bullet and did it myself. It's not all straight and not quite right in places but it'll have to do for now.
Here are the before and after pictures. Her pouty face, by the way, is not about the haircut but because she didn't like the clothes I put on her...she wanted to wear a "pretty dress".
Now Talitha is in love with her hair. When I told her that it could grow out again she protested and said that she will always want it like this--she calls it "little" instead of short. I guess I got lucky.

Wir haben beschlossen, dass es wirklich mal Zeit ist Talithas Haare zu schneiden. Sie kann es gar nicht leiden, wenn ihre Haare gebürstet werden und es ist immer zerzaust. Eigentlich wollte ich ihr nicht selbst den Haarschnitt verpassen, aber ich wollte auch nicht dafür bezahlen, vor allem wenn es dann vielleicht trotzdem nicht wünschenswert aussieht. Also, habe ich einfach die Zähne zusammengebissen und es doch selber gemacht. Es ist nicht ganz gerade und nicht ganz so wie es sein sollte, aber für jetzt muss es reichen.
Hier sind die davor und danach Bilder. Talithas Schmollmund ist übrigens nicht wegen dem Haarschnitt sondern wegen den Sachen, die ich ihr angezogen hatte. Sie wollte ein hübsches Kleid anziehen...
Jetzt liebt Talitha ihre Haare. Als ich sagte, dass sie es jetzt wieder wachsen lassen kann, protestierte sie und meinte, dass sie ihre Haare nun immer so "klein" haben möchte. Anscheinend hatte ich Glück.

The Audacity of Me

I guess I better write a little something before my blog goes inactive....I do apologize to those who actually look forward to see pictures and hear about our adventures. It had been pretty crazy here over Christmas with the weather, the season, activities and our kids in general. Then of course there's the usual and obligatory procrastination for me. Well, again, I'm sorry for not posting in sooooo long. Now I just have to decide if I continue where I left off (in July) or if I will start with Christmas and then possibly go back...?

One of Phillip's friends wanted to help Winston off the trampoline...but of course he couldn't hold my heavy baby and Winston fell on his face...Ouch.
But Winston still loves the trampoline.

Einer von Phillips Freunden wollte Winston vom Trampolin runter helfen...aber natürlich konnte er mein schweres Baby nicht halten, und Winston fiel auf sein Gesicht...Aua.

July Camping, Continued

I guess, I got so carried away about the sleeping thing that I never told you about the actual camping/boating experience. So, after sweeping Talitha off the table sleeping position and into the car, we were on our way. We met Bob and the rest of the boys at the lake. They had already been on the lake (Yale Lake, near Mount St. Helens) fishing. We joined them for a while until we all had to go and set up the tent. Then we had dinner--well, the adults had dinner, the kids were too excited to really eat--and the obligatory roasted marshmallows and s'mores. The kids slept well, once they settled down enough to fall asleep, and I found out that I don't do so well on a thin pad on the floor anymore. Aparently I'm getting old. The next morning Earl, Ethan and Tyson (whom I forgot to mention, sorry, Earl's youngest son was there too) had to leave. But we were joined by Spencer's brother Adam and their sister Jill. And it's good that Jill was there with her camera, because I had no chance to take any pictures, what with all the awesome wakeboarding I did...OK so I never really got up...this time anyway. Spencer's the good one. All in all we had fun, although we only caught 2 fish (1 had to be thrown back) and the water was really rather on the cold side. Oh, and we saw 2 bald eagles. How cool is that?!

July Camping

My father-in-law, grandpa, or Bob, likes to take his grandsons fishing. So he scheduled a Friday/Saturday fishing/boating trip with a one night stay at a campground (July 18 &19) for Spencer, Phillip, Earl (Spencer’s brother) and son Ethan, and Wade (another cousin). Spencer’s other brother, Adam (Wade’s dad), was scheduled to join the group on Saturday morning. Phillip was very excited.
Well, if you know me at all, that whole guy thing, girl thing just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s not that I think that guys shouldn’t have any fun on their own or that I have to do everything they do; but I do enjoy a lot of things that aren’t typically associated with girls. And I have noticed that the boys get to do things more often than the girls in this family. However, I know that this is not intentional. Bob likes to do outdoor stuff and girls usually don’t.
So, I may have said something to Spencer, ok, ok, I did definitely say something (don’t remember what) and my voice was heard…Therefore Maike plus daughter Talitha were also invited, as long as we didn’t mind sleeping in a big tent with a bunch of boys. On a side note, Winston was invited, but grandma and mommy agreed that it would be better for all of us to not bring a rather active, curious, mommy-attached, yet independent and loud 19-month-old. He stayed home with grandma.
Now Talitha got really excited, too. Bob left Friday morning with Phillip and Wade, Earl and Ethan. Spencer had to get some work done, so we wanted to leave in the afternoon with Talitha. I was getting stuff ready and Talitha got all dressed for camping and insisted on wearing her backpack around the house. I wanted her to eat something before we left, so I put her at the table with her food and continued getting ready. When I walked back into the kitchen I found her asleep at the table. I guess the excitement wore her out.
My family has a thing for falling asleep at the table--or other places--by the way.

Empty promises--hopefully not

So, I haven't blogged in forever, not that anyone's noticed, and I had these really good intentions to blog today...You know, after putting the kids to bed--Spencer had Scouts tonight, so he wouldn't distract me with his talking...But as it goes, it took longer to get the kids in bed than it should have. Well, truthfully, I just started late because the kids and I had a dance party, and how could I pass up the opportunity to impart some skill in rhythm and musicality to my children, seeing as they at times have seen their father “dance”. Therefore, kids to bed late, me catching up on emails, and now it’s late and I should go to bed. So, I’m still stuck in July and you have to wait a little longer to hear/see all about our camping adventures, mountain biking, crazy kids, Hawaii (yes, Spencer and I went to Hawaii and got back last week) and Halloween.

Daddy missed / Daddy vermisst

The first full week of July, Spencer went moutain biking with his Scouts for their high adventure. They had fun and everyone returned safely. Meanwhile at home, our kids (well mostly Phillip and Talitha; Winston just wants his mommy) missed their daddy sorely. So Phillip and Talitha had the idea to wear Spencer's shirts as pjs.

Die erste volle Woche im Juli, war Spencer mit seinen Scouts moutain biking. Sie hatten Spass und alle sind sicher wieder nach Hause gekommen. Inzwischen zu Hause, haben unsere Kinder ihren daddy sehr vermisst (na, hauptsächlich Phillip und Talitha; Winston will nur seine Mami). Also hatten Phillip und Talitha die Idee Spencers T-shirts als Nachthemden zu tragen.

The end of June my sister-in-law, Jill, had her friend Tracey plus children visiting from Utah. Since Tracey's kids and mine get along really well, we spent a bit of time together--at the Newport Aquarium and the beach, at Kid's Club, and at the zoo...

Ende Juni kam die Freundin meiner Schwägerin, Jill, aus Utah zu Besuch. Da Traceys Kinder sich gut mit meinen verstehen, haben wir einige Zeit miteinander verbracht--im Newport Aquarium und am Strand, im Kid's Club, und im Zoo.

Phillip's First Day of School / Phillips Erster Schultag

So I have to interrupt my catch-up time and quickly post Phillip's first day of Kindergarten, which was today. He was very excited last night. We picked out his clothes and got everything ready. When the kids were in bed, I proceeded to finish the "first day of school cone" for Phillip. That is a German tradition, all the children get a school cone from their parents on their very first day of school.
During the night Phillip had a bad dream and joined me in bed (Spencer is bear hunting with his dad and brothers). I got up early and wanted to study my scriptures, but Phillip woke up soon after, and kept asking if it was time to leave yet. We managed to get out the door before the other two woke up. Phillip got more nervous as we waited for the bus. When the bus finally came he looked worried but got on fine. When he arrived home (Winston, Talitha and I had to wait for quite a while by the side of the road--well, Winston took off to get some food or something from the house after he had had enough, but it worries me a little that we were so close to the road...Winston might think it's ok to run to the street now) Phillip was excited to unpack his school cone. It was a good day.

Phillip's Birthday

Finally, I've arrived at Phillip's birthday (trying to catch up on my blog entries), which was my goal for today (it is past midnight, though).
We had a birthday party/BBQ on Saturday. Then his actual birthday on Sunday June 15, which was also Father's Day (Phillip was born on Father Day) and Winston's first day in nursery at church. Now my first baby is 5!

Endlich bin ich bei Phillips Geburtstag angekommen. Das war mein Ziel für heute (es ist allerdings nach Mitternacht).
Wir hatten eine Geburtstagsfeier am Samstag und dann am Sonntag, 15. Juni, war Phillips eigentlicher Geburtstag, und auch Vatertag in den USA (Phillip wurde an einem Vatertag geboren) und Winstons erstes mal im Kindergarten in der Kirche. Jetzt ist mein erstes Baby 5!

Spencer wanted to show Phillip the train set we had bought and set up before we went to church. The rest of the presents came after church when Auntie Jill joined us.
Spencer wollte dem Phillip unbedingt die Eisenbahn, die wir im gekauft und aufgebaut hatten, noch vor der Kirche zeigen. Der Rest der Geschenke kam nach der Kirche, als Tante Jill sich uns anschloß.

Nate and Alyssa

Our friends Nate and Alyssa finally finished their grueling nursing program and had their official graduation June 12th. So we drove out to The Dalles to celebrate with them and their families. Although we did not stay for the graduation ceremony (we would have gotten home way late for the kids) we had fun at the park, eating and playing. I'm also happy to announce that both, Nate and Alyssa, have since passed their licensing exam and are working in the same hospital in Arizona. Too bad that's so far away from us.
Phillip actually asked me a few days ago when Nate and Alyssa would come over again to play with him (they are very good with our kids). After I explained that now they live far away, he said 'they can fly here and then stay with us'. I answered that they have jobs in Arizona. So, Phillip figured they could commute. 'That would cost a lot of money' I said. Phillip's response: 'Then they just go back to work and make more money!' How can you argue with that? Well, Nate and Alyssa?

Unsere Freunde, Nate und Alyssa, haben endlich ihr Krankenpflegetraining beendet. Ihre Abschlußfeier war am 12. Juni und wir sind nach The Dalles gefahren um mit ihnen und ihren Familien zu feiern. Wir hatten viel Spaß im Park, beim Essen und Spielen, obwohl wir nicht bis zum offiziellen Abschlußprogram blieben (wir wären viel zu spät für die Kinder nach Hause gekommen).
Seitdem haben Nate und Alyssa auch ihr Staatsexamen bestanden und arbeiten beide im gleichen Krankenhaus in Arizona, was leider viel zu weit weg ist. Vor ein paar Tagen hatte Phillip mich gefragt wann Nate und Alyssa mal wieder zum Spielen kommen (sie spielen toll mit unseren Kindern). Ich erklärte, daß sie jetzt zu weit weg wohnen. Also meinte er, daß sie herfliegen und bei uns wohnen könnten. 'Aber sie haben ihre Arbeit in Arizona' war meine Antwort. Phillip denkt allerdings, daß Nate und Alyssa zwischen uns und Arbeit pendeln können. Ich sagte: 'Das wäre aber sehr teuer.' Phillips Antwort: 'Dann können sie wieder zur Arbeit gehen und mehr Geld verdienen!' Was soll man dazu dann noch sagen? Also wie wär's, Nate und Alyssa?

Am 10. Juni war Phillips Abschlußfeier im Kindergarten. Die Kinder haben gesungen, dann gab es eine kleine Präsentation, und schließlich etwas zu essen.

Since Phillip's birthday fell into summer vacation, his preschool had an early birthday party for him. He got this cool crown, and he got to bring treats (which mommy got to make)--pizza and Aprikosenhäubchen, German cup cakes with apricots.

June 4th we received a package from Germany, from Oma und Aunt Sabrina, with a mini Pooh Bear for Winston, Phillip's birthday present (a children's CD), and long awaited and coveted gummy bears, plus German chocolate.

Am 4. Juni kam ein Päckchen aus Deutschland von Oma und Tante Brina mit einem Pooh Bären für Winston, Phillips Geburtstagsgeschenk und lang erwarteten, viel geliebten Gummibärchen und natürlich auch Schokolade. Vielen Dank Oma und Brina!!! Ich glaub die Gummibärchen haben keine 2 Tage überlebt.

Long time no hear/see.
I have been so neglectful (is that a word?)...I haven't even gotten Phillip's birthday on here, yet. And I do feel guilty, but I also have an overwhelming desire to keep on reading the Twilight series. That's part of my neglect. I just can't put those books down. But I will try to be better again.

Ich weiß, ich weiß, ich hab schon lange nichts mehr von mir hören lassen...Ich habe noch nicht einmal von Phillips Geburtstagsparty geschrieben. Und ich fühle mich schuldig, aber ich empfinde auch ein überwältigendes Bedürfnis die Twilight Serie (von Stephenie Meyer) zu Ende zu lesen. Ich kann diese Bücher einfach nicht aus der Hand legen (hab mir gestern das 4. Buch gekauft). Aber ich versuche mich zu bessern.

Vielleicht wird Winston doch kein football Spieler...oder beides?
Phillip und Talitha spielen zwar gern am Klavier aber eher nur zum rum albern. Doch Winston hatte sich richtig ins Zeug gelegt und es hat ihm sichtlich Spaß gemacht.

Maybe Winston won't become a football player...or maybe both?
Phillip and Talitha like to play on the piano but only to be silly. Winston, however, seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

April, April, der weiß nicht was er will. Es ist mal heiß, mal kalt, es regnet und ist windig...und es hagelt. Das ganze weiße Zeug ist nicht Schnee (obwohl es auch schneite diesen April) sondern Hagel.

In Germany we have a saying about the weather in April...that it is unpredictable, hot, cold, windy, rainy, all in one day...And it hails, too. All the white stuff is hail not snow (although it did snow this April, too).

Winston the football player

So, Winston is a pretty big boy, especially in our family where his 2 siblings usually dwindled somewhere below the 5th percentile for weight and not much higher for height (although Phillip's head has always been somewhat big). People often joke that we need to feed him more, or they ask if we've contacted the NFL, yet. Aparently, Spencer liked the idea of having a future football player in the house and he wanted to see what Winston would look like with shoulder pads...
Auntie Jill had to hold Winston for the frontal shot because that guy will not stand still.

Winston ist ein ziemlich großer Junge, vor allem in unserer Familie, wo seine Geschwister immer eher sehr klein waren (außer Phillips Kopf). Leute scherzen oft, daß wir ihn mehr füttern müssen, oder sie fragen, ob wir schon mit der NFL (National Football League, für amerikanisches football) gesprochen haben. Anscheinend gefällt dem Spencer die Idee, einen zukünftigen football Spieler im Haus zu haben, und er wollte sehen, wie Winston mit Schulterpolstern aussehen würde...
Auntie Jill mußte Winston festhalten, weil der Kerl einfach nicht stehen bleibt.

So a friend of mine, Andrea with daughter Kaitlyn, offered to come over and "play" with Talitha's hair, so I could learn something. She did great, I'm just not sure if I can repeat any of it.

On Saturday I got a haircut (in time for our family party). The girl thought that I was really funny, being such a tomboy with no make-up, so she wanted to "doll me up" by styling my hair.

Am Samstag (rechtzeitig für unsere Familienfeier) habe ich meine Haare schneiden lassen. Das Mädchen fand mich komisch, so jungenhaft und ohne Make-up, also wollte sie mich herausputzen, indem sie meine Haare stylte.

Talitha got a haircut, too. From her brother. This, and more, is what we found on the floor.

Talitha bekam auch einen Haarschnitt. Von ihrem Bruder. Das hier, und mehr, haben wir auf dem Boden gefunden.

So, grandma (I was still gone for my haircut) evened out her hair. It's a bit shorter now, but people haven't really noticed. She's still pretty.

Also hat grandma (ich war noch weg, für meinen Haarschnitt) Talithas Haare ausgeglichen. Es ist um einiges kürzer, aber die meisten Leute haben gar nichts bemerkt. Sie ist immer noch hübsch.

Puppy Love

Winston liebt Tuff und alles was draußen ist. Mami nennt ihn ein Hotte-kind, er würde zu dir passen, Hotte (mein großer, naturliebender, männlicher Schwager). Winston schaut gern aus dem Fenster, um Tuff zu sehen. Winston ist immer sehr aufgeregt, wenn er ihn sieht. 'Tuff' (ausgesprochen: Taf) ist sogar Winstons drittes Wort. Er kann aber das 'F' noch nicht aussprechen, also sagt er 'Tu' (Ta).

Winston loves Tuff and everything else outside. My mom calls him a "Hotte child", Hotte being my big, outdoorsy, manly brother-in-law. Winston would fit him. Winston likes looking out the window at Tuff. Winston is always very excited to see him. 'Tuff' is actually Winston's third word, except he can't pronounce the 'f' yet, so he says 'Tu'.

Mount Hood

The day after coming back from the beach, we decided to go to Mt. Hood and see what kind of trouble we could get into there. We found some snow caves, and four nice, young college students visiting from California. They let us use their sleds...Yes, my mom was sleding, too, but I just realized that, again, I have no picture proof of that. On the way back we drove past Multnomah Falls, where my mom, Spencer and the (potty trained, although that's questionable sometimes) kids got out to go to the bathroom and take in the view. But it was pouring with rain, so no pictures there.

Am Tag nach unserer Rückkehr von Seaside, entschloßen wir uns zum Mount Hood zu fahren, um zu sehen was wir dort noch so alles anstellen könnten. Wir fanden einige Schneehöhlen, und vier nette, junge Universitätsstudenten aus Californien. Sie liehen uns ihre Schlitten...Ja, meine Mama rodelte auch, aber ich habe gerade bemerkt, dass ich auch davon wieder keinen photografischen Beweis habe. Auf dem Rückweg fuhren wir an Multnomah Falls (einem tollen Wasserfall) vorbei, wo meine Mami, Spencer und die Kinder (die aufs Klo gehen, oder manchmal auch nicht) ausstiegen, um aufs Klo zu gehen und den Ausblick zu bewundern. Doch es goß in Strömen, also auch keine Bilder hier.

Seaside, Oregon

Dank Bob und Deanna konnten wir ein paar Tage (25. Feb bis 28. Feb) in Seaside, am Meer, verbringen. Wir hatten viel Spaß am Strand und im Pool. Zum Glück, hatten die Kinder auch Spaß und keine Angst so wie beim letzten mal am Meer. Wir besuchten auch den Strand im Oswald West State Park (Mon, und mit Bob und Deanna am Mitt). Das ist der etwas steinige Strand. Oswald West ist etwas abgelegen, man muß ein bißchen laufen, um hinzukommen, aber es ist super schön dort. Der andere Strand ist Seaside, direkt vor unserem Hotel. Wir waren auch im geheizten Pool draußen. Davon habe ich leider keine Bilder (Mami?).

Thanks to Bob and Deanna we spent some days (Feb 25 to Feb 28) in Seaside. We had a lot of fun on the beach and in the pool. Luckily, the kids had fun as well and weren't afraid like last time at the beach. We also went to Oswald West State Park (Mon, and on Wed with Bob and Deanna). That's the somewhat rocky beach. Oswald West is a little ways off the road, you have to hike in but it is gorgeous there. The other beach is Seaside, directly in front of our hotel. We also got into the heated outdoor pool. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of that (mom?).

Feb 25, our first day at Seaside, Oregon: Winston's first big injury. It stems from a sippy cup, can you believe it? He was holding it in his hands when loosing his balance while walking. Instead of dropping the cup he held onto it while bending over, and his forehead hit the sippy part of the cup just right, so that it split open.

25. Feb, unser erster Tag in Seaside, Oregon: Winstons erste grosse Verletzung, von einem Schnabelbecher...kaum zu glauben. Winston hatte den Becher in der Hand als er beim Laufen das Gleichgewicht verlor. Anstatt den Becher fallenzulassen, hielt er ihn beim Vorbeugen fest, und seine Stirn stoß mit Wucht auf den Schnabel des Bechers, so daß eine Platzwunde entstand.

So, I thought I'd try to be a good mother for once and let my kids do some art. Well, as you can see, Talitha has discovered make-up, or where make-up should go (sort of) if her mother had any. Excuse the pjs, she's in a much better mood if I don't make her change unless she wants to.

Ich wollte also abwechslungsweise mal versuchen eine gute Mutter zu sein und meinen Kindern die Gelegenheit zu geben Kunst zu produzieren. Nun, wie ihr sehen könnt, hat Talitha make-up entdeckt, oder wo make-up hin kommen würde (so ungefähr) wenn ihre Mutter welches hätte. Entschuldigt den Schlafanzug, sie hat viel bessere Laune wenn ich sie nicht dazu zwinge sich umzuziehen, es sei denn sie möchte sich umziehen.

Oh, and Talitha also found Winston to be worthy of some make-up.

Mighty tower / Mächtiger Turm

Following this is our December update. I have stuff for January, too, but that'll have to wait as it already is 2am and I need to get to bed. But first good news and then a funny story.
The news: my mom is coming to visit! She's coming on Feb 9th, that's only little over one week away!!!
The funny story: When Phillip came in from the building/playhouse for dinner today, I asked him to go and wash his hands in the bathroom. He obediently left, but when he came back he all of a sudden exclaimed, with a very concerned look on his face: "Oh no, mom!" "Oh no, what now?" I thought. He goes: "I accidentally brushed my teeth!" Daddy: "Well, did you wash your hands?" Phillip: "No." .... I know I do stuff like that. I thought it was old age. Maybe it's genetic! Huh, mom?

Nachfolgend sind unsere Dezemberaktivitaeten. Ich hab auch Sachen fuer Januar, aber das muss warten, da es schon 2 Uhr morgens ist und ich ins Bett muss. Aber zuerst noch gute Nachricht und eine lustige Geschichte.
Die Nachricht: meine mom kommt uns besuchen! Sie kommt am 9. Feb, das ist in nur knapp ueber einer Woche!!!
Die lustige Geschichte: Als Phillip heute vom Gebaeude/Spielhaus zum Abendessen nach Hause kam, bat ich ihn seine Haende im Badezimmer zu waschen. Er dackelte auch gehorsam los, doch als er wiederkam machte er auf einmal ein besorgtes Gesicht und rief: "O nein, Mami!" Und ich dachte, "o nein, was ist jetzt los?" Dann sagte er: "Ich hab versehentlich meine Zaehne geputzt!" Darauf Daddy: "Hast du deine Haende gewaschen?" Phillip: "Nein." ... Ich weiss, dass mir sowas passiert. Ich dachte, das ist das Alter. Vielleicht ist es ja genetisch. Hmh, Mami?

Merry Christmas / Frohe Weihnachten

I figured it was about time to start sending out Christmas cards. I've always had good intentions all the other years...it just never happened. So this year I was determined. Of course I didn't get the picture taken on time, but more like last minute...On a Sunday after church, I rallied the troops and posed them in front of Bob and Deanna's Christmas tree. Sixteen pictures later--thank you Jill!--I thought I had put Jill and everyone else through enough...there just had to be a good one in there. And so I managed the first year of sending out Christmas cards. As I write this, of course, I realize that not everyone who should have, actually received a card...I apologize. It was my first time...still flawed.

Ich dachte, dass es endlich mal an der Zeit waere Weihnachtskarten zu verschicken. Das wollte ich jedes Jahr schon seit laengerem tun...hab's aber nie gemacht (es wurde immer zu spaet). Doch dieses Jahr war ich entschlossen. Natuerlich hab ich's nicht fruehzeitig geschafft ein Bild von uns machen zu lassen, sondern fast zu spaet...An einem Sonntag nach der Kirche, trommelte ich die Truppe zusammen und posierte sie vor Bob und Deannas Weihnachtsbaum. Nach sechzehn Fotos--danke Jill!--dachte ich, dass Jill und alle anderen genug durchgemacht hatten...da musste ja wohl ein gutes Bild dabei sein. Und so schaffte ich es zum ersten mal Weihnachtskarten zu verschicken. Waehrend ich hier so schreibe wird mir aber natuerlich klar, dass nicht alle eine Karte erhalten haben...Es tut mir leid. Es war mein erstes mal...hat noch Fehler.

We encountered our first snow on Dec 1st while visiting friends in Allyn, WA. When Phillip noticed that it was snowing he just ran outside (at least he put on his shoes), leaving the door wide open, and started dancing and running in the snow.

Kids are great. Let me tell you a little about mine.
One day, in the beginning of November, I noticed a funny dark line on Talitha's head, a little later also on Winston's head. Come to find out that Phillip has been expressing his creative side on his siblings with ink. He also autographed one of our (Bob and Deanna's really) toilets.
The next day, Phillip and Talitha seemed to be playing well while I was cooking. At one point Talitha came into the kitchen and I noticed that her hair looked somewhat damp and she said something about having washed her hair all by herself. When I got closer to her, I noticed a strong, faintly familiar smell, but couldn't quite place it. So, I asked Phillip about it...well, she managed to dip her hair into fabric softener, while he was watching. And I wonder why it takes me 2 hours to cook these quick 15 minute meals...Now you know: I have to stop in the middle and periodically shower my kids.
Another favorite was when Phillip and Talitha tried to carry Winston up the (all hardwood) stairs. They could barely hold him. Talitha let go of his legs just as I raced into the room (from the kitchen where I had been trying to cook, yes), after hearing Phillip say: "I hold him here and you can hold his feet."
And then, one day when I told Phillip and Talitha to clean up their playroom--they actually did! At least they picked up the room. It took me a while to figure out where they had put some things, though. Well, take a look into our washer...=D

Kinder sind toll. Ich erzaehl euch mal ein bisschen von meinen.
Eines Tages, Anfang November, bemerkte ich eine seltsame dunkle Linie auf Talithas Kopf, und dann auf Winstons Kopf. Es stellte sich heraus, dass Phillip seine Kreativitaet mit Kugelschreiber an seinen Geschwistern ausliess. Er hinterliess auch seine Unterschrift auf einer unserer (naja, Bob und Deannas) Toiletten.
Am naechsten Tag, schienen Phillip und Talitha gut miteinander zu spielen, waehrend ich am Kochen war. Irgendwann kam Talitha in die Kueche, und ich merkte, dass ihre Haare etwas feucht aussahen, und sie sagte, dass sie sich ganz alleine die Haare gewaschen hatte. Als ich naeher an sie herankam, bemerkte ich einen starken Geruch der mir bekannt vorkam, aber ich wusste nicht woher. Also fragte ich Phillip...anscheinend hatte Talitha es geschafft ihre Haare in Weichspuelmittel zu tauchen, waehrend er daneben stand. Und ich wundere mich warum ich 2 Stunden brauche fuer diese schnellen 15 Minuten Rezepte. Jetzt wisst ihr's: ich muss mittendrin Pausen einlegen, um periodisch meine Kinder zu duschen.
Dann war da noch der Tag, als Phillip und Talitha versuchten den Winston die Treppe hochzutragen. Sie konnten ihn kaum halten. Talitha liess gerade seine Beine los, als ich ins Zimmer sauste (aus der Kueche, wo ich am Kochen war, natuerlich)...ich hatte naemlich den Phillip sagen hoeren: "Ich halte ihn hier und du kannst seine Fuesse halten."
Und dann, eines Tages, als ich Phillip und Talitha bat ihr Spielzimmer aufzuraeumen--taten sie es! Zumindest war das Zimmer aufgeraeumt. Es dauerte nur ein bisschen bis ich merkte, dass einige Sachen fehlten...Schaut mal in unsere Waschmachine.

For some reason I never got a picture of Talitha in her horsey costume. I'll have to ask Jen to mail some to me. We went trick or treating in Sherwood with Spencer's brother Earl and his wife Jen. Phillip was a monkey and sometimes Batman. Winston was a dinosaur (the same costume that Talitha was wearing last year, by the way; she was 19 months, Winston was 10 months).

Aus irgendeinem Grund habe ich kein Bild von Talitha als Pferd. Ich muss Jen fragen, ob sie mir Bilder schicken kann. Wir sind in Sherwood "trick or treating" gegangen, mit Spencers Bruder Earl und seiner Frau Jen. Phillip war ein Affe und manchmal Batman. Winston war ein Dinosaurier (das gleiche Kostuem, dass Talitha letztes Jahr trug; sie war 19 Monate alt, Winston war 10 Monate).

Gingerbread House

Last year I wanted to make gingerbread houses (yes, plural...I don't know what I was thinking) around Christmas time, you know start a tradition...but it never happened. Something about having a baby and two toddlers running the house...So, this year I really wanted to attain my goal of at least one gingerbread house. Then Spencer made the mistake (or was it calculated?) of mentioning to Phillip that we should start "practicing" making Christmas cookies. From then on every day I heard "We should make cookies. When are we making cookies? Why not?" from Phillip. Well, German Christmas cookies can get quite expensive if you make a lot of them and have to keep making them from October til December (which is what Spencer would love). Thus, I thought we'll make a practice gingerbread house, since I had never tried the recipe. So, we had a haunted gingerbread house for Halloween.
Letztes Jahr wollte ich zur Weihnachtszeit Lebkuchenhaeuser backen (ja, mehrere, ich weiss auch nicht was ich mir dabei dachte), als eine neue Tradition. Das hat aber nicht geklappt...hatte wohl was damit zu tun, dass ich ein Baby hatte und zwei Kleinkinder, die den Haushalt schmeissen...Also wollte ich dieses Jahr auf jeden Fall wenigstens ein Haeuschen backen. Dann beging Spencer den Fehler (oder war das Absicht?) dem Phillip zu sagen, dass wir ueben sollten unsere Weihnachtsplaetzchen zu machen. Jeden Tag hoerte ich "Wir sollten Plaetzchen backen. Wann backen wir Plaetzchen? Warum nicht?" vom Phillip. Da deutsche Plaetzchen teuer werden koennen wenn man viele macht, vor allen Dingen, wenn man sie von Oktober bis Dezember immerzu herstellt (was Spencer gerne haben wuerde). Daher dachte ich wir backen ein Lebkuchenhaeuschen zum Ueben, da ich das Rezept noch nie probiert hatte. Also hatten wir ein Lebkuchenhaeuschen (in dem es spukt) fuer Halloween.

We got a package from Oma in Germany. German chocolate...yummy. Phillip got his little lamb that Oma gave to him in Germany but we forgot to pack.
Wir haben ein Paeckchen von Oma bekommen. Viele Leckereien. Und Phillip konnte endlich wieder sein Laemmchen von Oma, dass er in Deutschland vergessen hatte, kuscheln. Danke Oma und Brini.

September Hike

The end of September we decided to take a family hike. As usual, we left later than planned and by the time we got to hiking we did not have as much time as we wanted before it got dark. But Spencer wanted to show us a certain waterfall and we pushed on to get there. Phillip and Talitha did well walking. On the way back it did get very dark on us. In the end, Spencer carried our backpacks and Phillip and I had Winston in a baby carrier and Talitha on my shoulders.
Ende September wollten wir eine Familienwanderung unternehmen. Wie ueblich sind wir spaeter als geplant losgefahren und hatten dadurch weniger Zeit bevor es dunkel wurde. Aber Spencer wollte uns einen bestimmten Wasserfall zeigen, also strebten wir vorwaerts um dort hin zu kommen. Phillip und Talitha sind ganz gut gelaufen. Doch auf dem Rueckweg wurde es sehr dunkel. Zum Schluss trug Spencer unsere Rucksaecke und Phillip, und ich hatte Winston im Tragetuch und Talitha auf den Schultern.
